Elon Musk Announces Removal of Blocking Feature on X, Formerly Twitter
In a recent announcement, Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed a significant change that is set to impact user interactions on the platform. As of now, users on X will lose the ability to block unwanted followers, a move that has raised concerns about user safety. This change, which eliminates what has long been considered a vital safety feature, is expected to reshape how users manage their online interactions.
Musk took to the platform on Friday to share this development, stating that the ability to block comments from unwanted followers will no longer be available. He clarified that blocking will only remain a feature for direct messages (DMs). Responding to a query from the account of Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, a group associated with the electric car company where Musk serves as CEO, he explained the decision. The post had asked about the distinction between blocking and muting someone.
The transformation of Twitter into X followed its acquisition by Musk for $44 billion the previous year. Under his leadership, the company has undergone extensive changes, including personnel adjustments, the reinstatement of previously banned accounts, and a recent rebranding of both the company and the platform as X. However, Musk did not provide a specific rationale or timeframe for the removal of the block function. He did, however, assure users that the mute function would still be available.
The block feature has long been used by users to ensure that their feeds remain free from hateful content and harassment stemming from their posts. In contrast, the mute function prevents an individual user from seeing undesirable responses without eliminating them from the feeds of others.
Beyond personal safety, the block feature has also been employed in boycotts and to avoid exposure to ads from specific brands or promoters on the platform.
Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance and an investor in the new Twitter venture alongside Musk, expressed reservations about the decision. He suggested that X should first address the issues related to bots and spam before considering the removal of block features. Zhao's perspective is rooted in his position as the head of one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges.
Louis Jones, a seasoned media and advertising executive now associated with the Brand Safety Institute, raised serious concerns about Musk's approach. Jones emphasized that Musk's decision might lead to an influx of spam, threats, and harmful content for users. He highlighted the potential negative consequences of what he referred to as Musk's "lax approach to free speech," indicating that it could fuel bullying and limit free expression for users targeted by bullies and predators. Jones painted a grim outlook for the long-term success of X if this trend continues.
